Accelerated Reader Policy
Accelerated Reader is an excellent tool for use in the classroom; teachers may make use of it in a way that fits their particular classroom needs. In the library we encourage students to select books that are on their reading level, but do not discourage students from selecting books above or below their level if they show a genuine interest; the library is a place where students can stretch their reading abilities to explore different subjects. Research also shows that students tend to select books below their reading level to read for enjoyment.
A student who completes their first 5 AR points receives a coupon for a free book from a selection in the library. At later milestones, such as 10 and 15 points, they receive a ‘brag tag’ to denote their achievement.
At the close of the year students reaching certain goals may have a celebration sponsored by the library- this has been dependent on the current Covid related policy of the school.
We try very hard to make our library a place where children are welcome and encouraged to read. Accelerated Reader may be part of a student’s decision when choosing a book, but fostering a love of reading always takes priority.
